Thred Up is a Scam!
January 17, 2024

I've been thinking about this review for some time now, mainly because when I first started using ThredUp it seemed like a good deal for me. I was able to recycle my old clothes I no longer needed and make some money. BUT those times are gone. ThredUp has been running on empty for a long time now, charging their clients to mail inventory to them and charging a processing fee. Quite literally the focus of their site... they're now charging because their business model isn't successful. Now while I admire their interest to re-up and bash fast fashion, they really do NOT practice what they preach. They sell H&M, Target, Macy's and Forever 21 brands on their site... these are just a few of the fast fashion brands that they look down on. When I first started selling on TU about 2 years ago, things were good. I was making about $600- $120 per box. There was no processing fee or return shipping fee then, please note. I was satisfied with the pricing, you might even say I felt they were charging TOO much for my items. That has completely changed. The reason for my review is to express my distrust in this system and the employees running TU. I most recently sent in a gm Louis Vuitton Masseur messenger bag. It was purchased and authenticated on eBay in 2021. I spent $600 on it. Truth be told, I never wore it, it was too big and I stopped carrying my laptop to work when Covid happened. I sent it to TU to sell. I am 100% careful and particular with having ALL of my returns sent back to me. I even label the shipping labels at my printer. I never heard back on that bag, it was not listed in my items nor was it returned to me. I called TU and they said that I sent it in on a no-return label. That was completely false. I asked for proof, but they couldn't show me anything. I had my proof, they dismissed it. I asked for the bag to be returned to me, they sent it up the never ending no one actually cares customer service which is a complete joke. I spoke with countless people, all with no answers except sorry it's gone. You're not organized? You don't keep records? You just toss in the garbage? I know without a doubt that there is a TU employee who is wearing that bag right now. They said it couldn't be authenticated, fine... just return it to me. Why toss it? Even if I had opted for the no return, which I did not. Why not for legal purposes send the high-end bags back. That's just good business. I worked a few summers for fun in consignment stores, I had the time of my life. And as good practice even when we said that if you don't pick up the bag within 30 days the store owns it... we kept the high end stuff for the sellers just in case. A happy seller, sells more stuff, keeps your inventory going and continues to buy. I mean, I think I learned that day one at Haas. My next issue came when they sold a Brahmin weekender bag, the limited edition sort... for $65. My cut was $20. I bought it for $500 brand new, and sent it to TU having never been used. Do they not do research? A quick google search had my bag on ebay, the real real, rebag and fashionphile all for over $500. BUT they sold this rare bag for $65, Brand spanking New. What? Why? No. Since then, I have pulled all my items from TU. I'd rather donate them to a charity and get the fat write off vs the measly few bucks they send your way. I think that is the trick? They sell an item or 2 of yours to keep you on the hook, but my high end items were going lost. They really should take a second look at how they operate. I've been called a VIP with them for 2 years since my items sell the highest, but they certainly don't treat me like it. I'd be surprised if they last past 2024. Not good business practices. They should be ashamed of the scammers they have become.

Lost Clean-Up Bag B2DW2-DJW4V
November 3, 2023

I sent in 8 Clean-Up bags, and they all arrived on 7-4-23 or thereabouts. The bag I have referenced showed to have been at the center on 7-4-23. I can no longer confirm this because it has been taken off my list. Anyhow, they lost the bag that I have been inquiring about since the uploading of my other seven bags. I was told not to worry, and the extension date of completion kept being moved out.

I have been a loyal customer of ThredUP for many years. I have questioned their review policy due to a Chico's Suede jacket that I sent in and was not selected and could not be found when I asked to have it returned. There have been other instances, but I continued to support the company.

The loss or theft of this bag is the last straw. This bag contained moderately to high-end handbags from Coach and Dooney & Burke, Chico dresses and jackets, and other items that would have gained me a better return, and they only offered me $103.89 for the bag.

Their terms and conditions state: "Consignment Clean Out Kits. You will continue to own and have title to each item of Property that we have accepted until that item is "sold". An accepted item will be considered sold when: (a) thredUP buys your item or (b) an item is sold by thredUP to a customer and not returned to thredUP within the then-current return window. Any items will immediately and irrevocably become the Property of thredUP at the expiration of the listing window and will not be returned, unless Return Assurance is applicable, or if the item (1) is eligible to be reclaimed; and (2) is timely reclaimed under these terms."

I forwarded this to Customer Service with the following comments, "My items have yet to be sold by your company or physically returned to me. I am still the owner of the items until, as you said in your Terms, ThredUP purchases my items or is sold by ThredUP. So my compensation and loss of my property is worth more than your offer. I entrusted you with my items so that you would maintain them, secure them, and sell them. You failed on all three levels."

They have yet to respond to my counteroffer. Since the items are mine until they sell them, everything in the bag is mine that has been lost or stolen. They should compensate me for my loss, not their estimated loss of revenue.

This is the first time I have made this post, and I am not comfortable doing so, but I have been tolerant of their lack of customer support and how they treat any customer. I know this complaint will not get my items back, nor will it give me the compensation I want, but I want others to know that ThredUP is not a credible company and that they are taking advantage of their customers and those who submit items to be sold.

Included in the seven bags were two bags of baby clothes. These bags cost me $14.99 for over 30 items. I was going to receive $0.19 on average per item. The bags would not pay for themselves, and I would have been better off donating them to Goodwill.

ThredUP lists me as one of their VIP members, but I do not know of other companies that treat their VIPs this way. I am so disappointed in what has happened, and I am waiting for the last of my items to be sold or expired, and then I am done with ThredUP.

It's just ok
July 19, 2023

Having never bought or sold cloths before. Wanted some designer cloths at a reasonable price. Brands like Ralph Lauren,Lacoste, vineyard vines. I was able to buy new with tags cloths at a reasonable price (some where from stores like tjmax/Ross) I did pay more than the original purchaser paid. But less than if it was bought from a department store. I did get items labeled new with tags. That only had the plastic price tag attached as if the person wore the item and sent it in with out removing the plastic tag and it was marked new with tags. Do believe some of the items were worn and sprayed with febreeze and sent in
I did complain and got credits for some items. Customer service does try to fix the issues with the merchandise if they mislabeled it.
It also comes packaged nicely wrapped in tissue paper. I've never paid for shipping. I've always been over the amount need for free shipping and usually opt to shop for the week. But if you were to have to pay for shipping the costs is very high.
But the clean outs. They are interesting. I sent in over 50 items. Some brand new. Only 16 items were listed not all the new with tags items were listed. 16 out of 50 were listed. And 9 out of 16 sold. I paid for the bag to be shipped at a cost of 19.99. Which I knew. So whatever I made from the 50 items i knew they would deduct 19.99. If you don't get a bag sent to you and you used your own bag/box you would only have 14.99 deducted from your sold items. I made a total of 5.00 dollars for my 50 items.
Normally I'd donate my items. So It's more than I would have gotten from donating and it was interesting to see what was listed, it was also interesting to see what sold. I even enjoyed seeing the likes add up. But for anyone that actually thinks they are going to make any money. This isn't the place.
It took two months for the items to be listed they did give an estimated date of when my items would be active. I wasn't told anything about the items that were not listed but I also agreed to not get my items back that would be an additional cost. You could change price of items and add to the description.
Improvement would be if you could change the title of the item. I believe some of my items were listed incorrectly under vs instead of Victoria secret, fp instead of free people. You cannot change that.
It's just ok—- I like some stuff I ordered. I paid more than the original purchaser according to the tags—I sent in 50 items for resale made 5 dollars—customer service tries to satisfy my requests— coupons don't often work (even when they send you a code it doesn't work) they do say buy it and we will credit you. But you have to contact them. Which is time. — it's just ok.

Fakes, inaccurate listings and more
July 2, 2023

As a buyer on ThredUp, almost every order I have EVER made has came with issues. The worst was when 6 out of 10 of the items were not even the right brand, another was a poorly made fake Palm Angles hoodie, and two other items had MAJOR flaws that were not listed. It took days to fight it because when I first contacted customer service the man I was emailing back and fourth, they wanted me to lose a percentage (with a fee) of what I had paid. I put my foot down as that was not acceptable to make me have to take a lose on their mistakes. Once we agreed that wasn't happening they wanted me to say for my own shipping. I said no. Then they agreed if I paid for it, they would reimburse me. I didn't trust that at all and demanded they simply send me a PRE-PAID label. Not that hard. In the end, 9 out of 10 of the items had to be sent back and it's time consuming to have to take time off of work and drive to the nearest drop off which is 25 miles away.

They used to be really bad about listing in excellent condition, or state no flaws, etc. But I would get items with MAJOR flaws. One item had a large hole about and inch by an inch. A Jacquemus top arrived with the take cut so you could only read the J and the US, for the amount I paid that was not fitting for it to arrive like that. And the flaws go on and on so always check your closes when they arrive. However, I can say they have got much better listing flaws and issues, but it could still be better.

More recently I paid $53 (with a discount/they originally wanted $89) for what was listed as a designer brand which retails between $200-$300 new. However the pants I receive were a style that go for less than $35 full price at Pacsun. So I not only paid more then what they would have costed new but once again they wanted me to pay for the shipping. I ended up just eating the loss because I didn't have time to make it to the post office within the time frame. During this same order two items were not the correct brand. This was not the only item in this order that was marked as a brand it was not.

A few weeks ago I also ordered some Lululemon, what arrived was Zella, which I definitely over paid on as I could have easily paid half what I had paid for the items at Nordstrom Rack. So again disappointed.

Another issue I have a lot is the inconsistencies in their sizing. They will mark it one size, but the measurements don't add up. So I might thing I am getting something that is a size 2 and I end up getting a size 10, even though they listed it as a 2. I always try to judge the size from the pics too. Sometimes it was say it's a size XS but it's on a plus size mannequin for example, so you know they made a mistake.

There is multiple flaws in the site, such as when doing a detailed search, or issues at check out. Often when I click the ship now option vs the bundle option, it still gives me the "bundle," which isn't a big deal but I have had to check and fix the issue sometimes days later when I'm sitting wondering where my items are.

Of course everything is used, so expect some flaws, smells, etc. However, I have had some items that have smelt soooo foul and terrible I question why they felt it was acceptable to sell. If you watch some unboxing on YouTube, I've been other buys complain about the same thing. And of course ThredUp leaving out major flaws is not right either.

My biggest issue is how difficult ThredUp makes it to return items which they made mistakes on. They make it very difficult and I am sure it's intentional, but that reflects poorly on them. I guess their bottom line is make money, NOT being a reputable company.

Now for the positives of ThredUp. You can find some great deals and save some money, if you get the correct items. Free shipping over $79 as of July 2023. This is subject to change in the future.

Do NOT trust Thred-Up

THRED-UP WARNING
(please read)
I was told about Thred-up thru a customer of mine. It sounded like a great app to sell a lot of my clothing, shoes, and purses. Most of these items were already pictured because I had them listed beforehand on Poshmark or FB. I was overly excited so I immediately packed 2 boxes full. Each box measured 27" x 12" x 12" and weighed between 28lbs and 29lbs with a limit of 30lbs. About a month later they finally received 1.2 weeks after that, they received the 2nd one. After they go thru the boxes and decide what they're going to sell, they picture the items, then list the items. Then they are supposed to alert you that the items are now up for review. You have 12 hours to change the prices and information. Once the 12 hour period is over, you can not change anything. Well, luckily I stay on top of my business and checked the Thred-up app every day. My bag was processed and was already in the 12 hr window and I never received an email from them saying so. I tried changing a few prices and couldn't. I immediately wrote them to notify them about the problems I was having. I spent hours trying to talk to support about it and they were of no help. They kept putting the blame on my phone...it needs to update, I need to clear the cache, etc. After googling it myself...they don't tell you that you can't do anything thru the app. It all has to be done thru the site on Google.

Now that both my boxes were accepted, pictured, listed, etc. I noticed a lot of my items were being shown thru Thred-up ads. People out there were going to see my items! I showed my man with excitement and he went to check out my items for himself. He's a big supporter! This is where we realized my items were all listed $2 more than what everything was priced at. Thred-up is making an extra $2 on each item without the sellers knowledge. Now I had to write support again and find out why? If I alert my customers and tell them they can find my items at a specific website or app and the item is this specific amount...and it's not!...I look like the liar. I look like a scam! I look incompetent! I wrote Thred-up and explained the situation. They ended the conversation without any response. This was repeated 3 or 4 times. A short while later, I received an email from them saying that for some reason I wasn't seeing their responses and that's just how they do things. That it's another fee. Another fee? One item I had listed (for example) was a brand new $75 coat that they listed for $21.99. I couldnt change the price higher than $23.99 because then I would get charged another $5. If it sells I only receive $5 from that as it is?! Then they're making an extra $2? Doesn't make sense to me and it's all in secret unless you see it.

Now let's skip to the part where they returned the items they didn't want to sell. This surprised me because everything I had sent was name brand and in excellent or brand new condition. But I do understand because they only want items that will sell. But it was a little odd that they specifically picked out 14 items from each box I sent it. Whatever the case may be, I need to get these items listed and sold. Luckily half the work is done because I already have pictures of the items in my phone. So I listed a few items and then thought maybe I should pull all the items out of the bag they sent it in to make sure the items are still in the same condition. Pulled a shirt out...caked food fell to the floor. It looked like someone tried the shirt on, ate their lunch, dropped food on it, and decided they no longer wanted it. Each item I pulled out after that, had food and stains on them. Then I saw the brand new Shein bathing suit I sent. If you've bought from Shein before, you'll know that every item or outfit gets sent in a closed Shein bag. There was no bag and the bikini top was gone. I only received the bottoms. The 2 outfits they listed, they took them out of the bags also and listed them separately. I immediately wrote them again demanding to talk to someone. I got nowhere but they'll respond within a time frame thru email.

Do NOT send your items to Thred-up! You will get ripped off and there will never be a class action lawsuit due to "they don't make enough". Rip off scam artists!

Thred-up, your business is unethical
September 8, 2022

I've been a loyal customer of Thred-up over the years, both buying and selling on the site. My most recent clean out was sent this past April and I mailed in three large boxes full of Anthropologie, Marc Jacobs, BCBG Maxazria, and some Isabel Marant. I received emails apologizing for the delay in processing, but in the end, they were not processed until mid-July. It has never taken this long when I previously consigned with them, and it left my items going on to the site at a time when people are taking vacations and preparing for the start of the new school year, not really doing a lot of online summer clothes shopping.

Since I had sold many times before, it didn't occur to me to check the website's policies on selling. I noticed after my items were processed that the percentage of the profits that come to the seller have been greatly reduced since I last consigned with Thred-up. Also, to my surprise, I discovered that the amount of time that an item can be consigned had been reduced from 2 to 3 months to 2 weeks to a month. Not only that, but that the company would retain the items that had not sold in the limited time window, (they refer to these items as "expired,") but continue to offer them for sale on their site, and Thred-up would then take 100% of the profit when they are sold. Not only do they get all the money from these expired items, they clutter the site with clothing that they would have donated in the past. Your items for sale are then competing against all these additional items for attention on the site, items that Thred-up may never donate, because they stand to gain 100% profit.

They now allow you to "reclaim" an item once there is only a week left for it to sell. This doesn't sound too bad except that you then have to pay $8.95 in shipping to get the item back. Combining multiple "expired" items is difficult too, because they are often listed at different times and so they expire at different times as well. This complicated system also requires that you constantly monitor your items, so nothing expires before you can make a price adjustment or request a reclaim. Currently, an Isabel Marant dress that I sent them just expired, while I was busy with work and missed the window to reclaim it. It is now listed for $92.99, and when it sells they will receive all of the profits from my dress. (Once your time runs out on your item, you cannot reclaim it). All this makes it nearly impossible to retrieve your most valuable items that haven't sold, or to make any real money on anything you sell. These are all major changes to their selling model, all benefiting Thred-up, and all drastically reducing the amount of money that can be made by the seller. I'm sure Thred-up is making a far greater profit, but sellers will notice that their earnings have been greatly reduced, and that to make it worth their while at all, they have to remain constantly vigilant, watching their accounts. This eliminates the one and only advantage that Thred-up ever had over the other sites… ease.

Unfortunately, I mailed out three boxes of top quality winter clothes before I realized they had made these changes. I'm sure it would be cost prohibitive to attempt to have them returned to me at this point. Aside from making almost $700 in selling clothing on Thred-up over the years, I've purchased quite a bit of clothing as well, and for the buyer there are great deals to be found. But, after this last experience selling, it's quite evident why there are such good deals to be found- the consigners are being taken advantage of. I don't want to contribute to the unsavory business practices that essentially rob people of their items to make a profit. It's unfortunate that the friendly, ethical company I once dealt with has resorted to these kinds of practices. I'm not the only one who will have this kind of experience, and walk away.

Tip for consumers:

Please don't support this business. The prices are great for the items on their site, but they are able to offer for them for so little because they are so unscrupulous in their dealings with consigners.

Completely unacceptable practices

BUYER'S Experience:

The whole reason I even went to their website, and then spent hours there, was because of this ONE Shirt I wanted. There are so many messed up things - they are definitely playing with human psychology by having a time limit for how long things can be in your cart (creating a sense of urgency to buy) but others can "shop your cart" so nothing is really safely in your possession... until you buy. Imagine this in the physical world, another shopper at Target seeing something you have in your cart and just swooping in to grab it when you look away. Weird and, again, creates urgency. Anyway, I had the ONE shirt I wanted (and a bunch of other stuff to get free shipping) and then I clicked to check out, only to be told to login. No problem, I thought. NOPE - during that time of logging in, someone else took that ONE SHIRT and the only way I could get it back was to hope, appeal to the clothing gods, and wait for it to expire from their cart. It came back (at a higher price, because now the shirt was "wanted" - just another screwed up feature of this company). But at this point, I didn't care. I put it back in my cart and used my credit card to check out. Whew. The whole ordeal was over and I could expect to see my clothing shipped to me soon. JUST F*CKING KIDDING! Today I got an email:

"Unfortunately, one of the items you ordered is no longer available. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. All of our items are one-of-a-kind, and occasionally a listed item is unable to be located or found to have quality issues. A refund for the item listed below has been processed. If you have any questions, please chat with us here."

Spoiler alert: it was the ONE SHIRT I actually cared about. So not only did I go through the pain of the shirt being 'stolen' from my shopping cart from another person when I was told to login but after being assured that the shirt was going to be mine, they've ripped it away again. JUST NOW SEEN: the ONE SHIRT they said is no longer available was offered up again for a higher price. So they won't put my purchased item in the box to me, they try to extract more money for it. I'm beyond furious at the time and money wasted at this point.

This is a bait-and-switch tactic unlike any I've ever experienced and I cannot tell you how much they've created animus for a company on a person's VERY FIRST EXPERIENCE. All I can think is how inconsiderate and unkind towards customers the company must be. A simple refund isn't good enough. ThredUp, I'm FedUP. Do better.

Jumpsuit disappointment
May 1, 2022

For the most part I have always had positive experiences shopping Thredup, their representatives have always been kind and helpful, and as a thrift store junkie I am addicted to their website. When I have had problems with their merchandise they have always been responsive and professional.

I bought several items via a bundle a week or so ago. I noticed that Thredup had cancelled the item I was looking forward to the most. I contacted Thredup support to see why it was cancelled and was messaged "When an order is packed, our team completes one final inspection to ensure that you're receiving items that meet our strict quality standards. In this case, we found that item Cotton Candy Romper had a previously undetected flaw that did not meet our standards. To avoid any disappointment, we removed the item from your order and provided you with a refund on 4/25/22."

The item was white and the pictures were crystal clear (this is not always the case). The item was marked as having gentle wear, which I was fine with. I did not see any other issue, and the garment was perfectly visible front and back.

Supposedly Thredup donates their defective merchandise to charity. I do not understand why, if the item was so defective that they couldn't sell it, they would not send the item to me with the rest of my order. They obviously had it right there as they put my order together. I think someone snatched it for themself. I know other buyers who have had an item identified as defective by Thredup at the point of shipment, and in those cases they were credited their money but still sent the item. If I was sent the item and felt it was too defective to use, I would just donate it like Thredup claims they do anyhow. I do not expect freebees, but I really wanted this item and based on the scenario that they couldn't sell it anyhow, why wouldn't they pass it along? It'd be a totally different situation if it was a matter of the item being lost or sold on one of their other venues and no longer available.

Let me emphasize that I do not think that Thredup has a workforce of sketchy scam artists. I think their customer service does an excellent job, especially for the scale of business they conduct. You will find bad actors in every work force, and that is what I am guessing happened here based on the scenario. My hope is that this isn't a normal occurance.

I did share these thoughts with the Thredup representative I conversed with, but wanted to post a review in case this was happening to other people. I am hoping sharing my experience with other shoppers will help heal my mourning over the jumpsuit that could have been.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review!
